Adult Education
Temple provides numerous classes and other opportunities for adult education throughout the year. For example, we offer Hebrew classes for individuals who desire to learn Hebrew, adult B'nai Mitzvah classes for adults who wish to prepare for Bar or Bat Mitzvah, and Voices of Wisdom lunchtime discussions. In addition, in recent years our Midrasha classes have included
Jewish Fiction, Torah Study, Musicality of Torah, Reform Judaism, First Amendment and Church/State Issues, Displaced Persons After the Holocaust, Biblical Prophets, Mysticism, Judaism and Christianity, Jewish Spiritual Ethics, Bioethics and Judaism, Community of Difference Diversity Workshop and Swimming in the Sea of Talmud. Other
programs, which vary from year to year, include lectures/discussions during Oneg Shabbat, and Sunday morning brunches provided by the Adult Education Committee or the Temple Brotherhood, as well as other opportunities sponsored by Temple auxiliaries.
In addition, a group of Temple members meets approximately one Shabbat morning (at 9:00 a.m.) each month prior to services to discuss Torah. Leadership rotates among members, with the month's leader selecting readings and leading the discussion. (The task of bringing the bagels also rotates.) Readings are distributed in advance. This group has spirited discussions, in which everyone's opinion is solicited and welcomed. If you'd like to attend, please contact the Temple office and ask for the next session's materials.
Temple Beth-El annually hosts the largest ecumenical and inter-faith activity in Northern Indiana. For more than 25 years we have presented the Kurt and Tessye Simon Foundation Institute on Judaism, a seminar for clergy and educators on a subject of interest to many faiths. Our scholar-in-residence also gives Shabbat evening and morning sermons, and a Sunday morning lecture fore the congregation.
This broad range of programs ensures that there is something of interest to all of the adult members of our community, regardless of their level of Jewish educational background. We invite you to participate in any activity that interests you.
For information on upcoming adult education opportunites, please view the Temple Calendar (education-related events are color-coded in red on the calendar).
